| Maury River Fiddlers'
Convention - 2008 RULES FOR CONTESTANTS, SPECTATORS & CAMPERS
- Bands register under the name of the band; bands must have
banjo, fiddle, and guitar. Bands must play Friday and Saturday.
Bands can add or replace members prior to the first
performance, but the addition/replacement must be a registered
contestant. Bands cannot add or replace members for the second
performance. Bands will play two songs, both judged. No warm up
allowed on stage. We reserve the right to limit bands to one song
depending on the schedule.
- Band manager or designee must appear backstage at the time set
out on the schedule to verify intent to perform. Order of
performance on Friday night will be by random drawing. On
Saturday night the order will be reversed so that the band playing
first on Friday will play last
on Saturday. If you miss the drawing on Friday, but arrive before
the end of the contest your
band is entering (bluegrass or old time), then you WILL be allowed
to perform last and will
play in reverse order on Saturday night. Bands that fail to appear
when scheduled will be
disqualified from the competition.
- Because of the tight schedule we are following, contestants
should refrain from talking on
stage. Even introduction of band members is cause for
disqualification.
- No medley of tunes allowed.
- Individuals may compete in one band as an individual, in one
instrumental category, plus folk song and/or flatfoot. Competing in
violation of this rule will disqualify BOTH of the bands
AND the individual from all categories.
- Individual instrumentalists may be accompanied by on
instrumentalists (no vocals); the
accompanying instrument can be the same as the instrument being
judged; however, the
accompanist must be back-up only (for example, a guitar can
accompany a guitar). Folk
singers may: 1)sing a Capella; 2)accompany themselves on an
instrument; 3)be accompanied by one instrumentalist; or, 4)accompany
themselves on an instrument AND be accompanied by one
instrumentalist.
- Children (16 and under) may compete either in the adult
individual competitions or in the
children’s competitions. A child may compete as an adult in one
competition and as a child in another (for example, as an adult in
Old Time fiddle and as a child in folk song), but may not compete as
an adult and as a child in the same competition (for example,
Bluegrass fiddle and children’s bluegrass instrumental). A child who
competes in ANY adult competition will be reimbursed as an adult.
- Only string acoustic instruments on stage; no electric
instruments.
- Taps are not permitted in the dance contest or in the audience.
- Contestants must purchase contestant bracelet; individual
contestants will be reimbursed after performance. Non-performing
spouses will not be reimbursed.
- Lost, damaged, or mutilated bracelets will not be replaced.
- Rules governing ties will be available backstage.
- Only songs and instrumentals from the public domain – no
copyrighted music permitted.
- Only authentic folk songs in the folk song contest. Folk song
contestants are limited to three minutes.
- By performing, all contestants agree that the sponsor may record
and reproduce performances free of claim by contestants. The sponsor
has the exclusive right to record and reproduce music played at the
convention.
- City of Buena Vista animal control ordinances apply at Glen
Maury Park. No animals are
permitted in the performance area.
- Skateboards are allowed in the designated area only. Bicycles
and ATV’s are not allowed due to the high amount of traffic in the
campground.
- Golf carts cannot be operated by children under 16 (valid
driver’s license) at anytime.
After dark all golf carts must have headlights. Contact park office
for other golf cart regulations.
- Alcohol is not permitted in the performance area.
